Topophilia
-
Some of these photographs are of places I have been hundreds of times, places I grew up in or lived, some of these photographs are of places I have never returned. For me, my love of photography and love of place has more to do with the quality of the moment than anything else. All of these collected moments meant something to me that was worth holding onto.
I first encountered the term topophilia in the French philosopher Gaston Bachelard’s The Poetics of Space: The Classic Look at How we Experience Intimate Places. The term topophilia was originally coined by the humanistic geographer Yi-Fu Tuan and denotes a strong sense of place; an affective bond with one’s environment, a person’s mental, emotional, and cognitive ties to a specific place. In the decade that I have been taking photos, it is that glimmer of intimacy that I am trying to take with me.
